New Piece- 07/29/2023
Well, here we are. I'm starting a piece I'm not sure if I'm excited for, dreading, or a mix of both. It's a larger piece that usual for me and I'm intimidated by my decision to use oils for a subject that, up until now, I've been rendering primarily in watercolor or acrylic ink. The initial sketch had me excited to work on a slightly smaller canvas and then I spent too much time staring at the canvas, that, length-wise, is as long as my torso. I'm not very tall, but when the canvas is almost as big as you are, it's a little daunting to stare at it, knowing that you will be working on it and the scale alone means your process won't be quite the same.
The initial sketch had me excited to work on it:
I like the energy and the sort of comic panel influence coupled with the halo around the main octopuses head. I do wish I was one of those artists who could have really clean sketches however because the transfer process here was a bit of a mess. It was hard to determine which lines to follow when I traced this at a larger scale onto several sheets of tracing paper and it wound up making the transfer ultimately take longer than I would have liked.
The end result of the transfer isn't bad, but I think I'll get a better idea of how I feel about this piece once I start.
I'm hoping to use this blog to update with progress and commentary on my projects. I always enjoy sharing the process and I feel like half of the fun with art is seeing how it's made so I'm going endeavor to show you that.
